Yorkshire Water unveils net zero carbon strategy

by Trevor Loveday

Yorkshire Water has unveiled a strategy to achieve carbon net zero by 2030.

The strategy focuses on five areas: resilience to climate change; reducing carbon consumption; reducing carbon emissions; expanding carbon storage capacity; and partnerships with local organisations.

The company outlined the measures it will take as:

  • for climate resilience, to make long term transformation changes to adapt to the impacts of climate change;

  • carbon reduction through greater energy efficiency including a cut electricity use by 28% by 2030;

  • reducing emissions by choosing renewable energy and low-carbon fuels with up to 120 MW of solar deployed by 2030 and a minimum of 30% of all power needs to come from onsite renewables;

  • improving carbon storage by retaining and improving land to store carbon through tree planting, peatland restoration and other initiatives, with a storage target of up to 27ktCO2e by 2030; and

  • forming key partnerships by co-ordinating efforts with Yorkshire institutions to develop electric vehicle infrastructure and other projects.
