Yorkshire Water to roll out sewer blockage prediction AI across its network

Yorkshire Water is to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI) solution to predict sewer blockages across its network of more than 2,000 combined sewer overflows, following a successful pilot.

The pilot involved a partnership between Yorkshire, Siemens and the University of Sheffield. Sensors were installed and fed water level data into a Siemens IoT system, enabling the performance of the sewer network to be analysed in real time and problems like network blockages to be predicted before they happen.

The University of Sheffield analysed 21,300 days of data, and found the blockage predictor could provide up to two weeks’ notice of problems within the sewer network and identify nine out of ten potential issues – three times more successful than existing pollution prediction processes, while reducing the number of false positive alerts by 50%.
