Yorkshire Water has announced a package of measures to improve river water quality, reduce the use of storm overflows and increase transparency about these issues.

The package included commitments to:

• develop interactive maps to share near real time spill data at bathing water sites;

• invest £790m by 2025 on river improvements, including £500m to reduce phosphorus from wastewater works by 56% compared to a 2020 baseline; £137m on storm overflow improvements; £13m on disinfection at three wastewater works upstream of the Ilkley river bathing site; and £2m to reduce the risk of nitrate pollution at Hornsea Mere, which is in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone;

• increase storm tank capacity at 50 wastewater works; and

• reduce spills at the most frequently spilling overflows.

Chief executive Liz Barber added: “We are also launching a consultation with customers, key organisations and stakeholders in the region to really understand the role our rivers play within the communities they run through and what kind of improvements people want to see in the coming years and beyond.”
