TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
Yorkshire Water is using 3D inspection technology to survey and map manholes, pumping stations and shafts that are difficult or impossible for fieldworkers to access in what it claims is a first for the UK.
The water company is using VScout technology – developed by US firm, Subterra – to examine and record the condition of its sewer network in wastewater network pilot projects in Holbeck and Ilkley. It anticipated the VScout will identify sewer blockages and enable Yorkshire to tackle them before they become a problem.
According to Yorkshire, surveys take about two minutes to complete. VScout provides detailed, 3D measurements of manholes and shafts and an interactive 360-degree video of the inspection that can viewed remotely to be viewed by experts. And an analytics platform enables Yorkshire Water’s team to inspect, tag and report the condition of the sewer networks and to provide accurate locations of areas recorded in videos so future work can be carried out efficiently.
