Yorkshire Water and Anglian Water have formed a “short-term partnership” to trial the prospects for sludge trading.

Under the trade deal, sludge will be transported from Anglian’s treatment works in Great Billing to Yorkshire Water’s wastewater treatment facilities where it has upped its treatment capacity with a new anaerobic digestion plant at Huddersfield.

Bioresources waste services manager at Yorkshire Water, Kevin Spink, said: “This sludge trade deal is a first for Yorkshire Water and illustrates the benefits available to our sector through collaboration with other companies.” He said Yorkshire was looking to ensure that sludge treatment could be made more efficient through arrangements like the Anglian one.

He said Yorkshire Water was speaking with other water and sewage companies to explore further use of its internal sludge treatment expertise.
