Wessex backs biodiversity scheme with project to curb pharmaceuticals in rivers

by Trevor Loveday

Wessex Water is supporting a green infrastructure project that works to improve biodiversity and create accessible green spaces in North East Somerset.

The water company is piloting work with public health authorities in the area in a bid to reduce pharmaceuticals in watercourses. The work involves guiding patients to groups and outdoor activities that are alternatives for prescribed medicine.

The infrastructure project, Somer Valley Rediscovered, is a partnership led by Bath and North East Somerset Council, working in partnership with the council’s public health division, Natural England, Bristol Avon Catchment Partnership and other local partners.

The project area includes Radstock, Midsomer Norton and Westfield, Paulton, Peasedown St John and the surrounding countryside. The West of England Combined Authority Green Recovery Fund has awarded some £900,000 to the project for nature recovery work such as grassland restoration and the management of woodlands and watercourse
