Welsh Water scheme lets contractors self-certify water connections

Welsh Water has launched a new self-certification programme to enable contractors to certify their own new water connection works, rather than getting them inspected by Welsh Water.

The programme’s new Water Industry Approved Plumber qualification will, according to the company, eliminate the need for trench inspections by Welsh Water, to speed up new water connections and also improving health and safety on site as trenches will not need to be left open ready for inspection.

The programme was unveiled at one of the company’s Developer Forums where, separately, it reported working with other stakeholders to identify sustainable short- and long-term measures to prevent proposed new developments increasing phosphate levels in areas where there are rivers in in Special Areas of Conservation.  The aim, it said was to “ identify if there is any way it can help to unlock the hold on new developments” in those areas.
