Welsh Water reservoirs win prize for sustainability

by Trevor Loveday

Welsh Water’s Llanishen and Lisvane Reservoirs have won a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) UK Award, as Land Management and Sustainable Development project of the year.

RICS judges praised the project for its community group involvement and Welsh government collaboration, which “created a facility that has used strict and innovative land management and construction practices to improve biodiversity and sustainability.”

For the award, the project was assessed on “how well land is managed and developed to promote economic growth, social well-being, environmental protection, and cultural preservation.”

The water company said that since acquiring the site in 2016, it had worked closely with the Reservoir Action Group (RAG), the local community, and various stakeholders to “develop a shared vision and assemble a team of technical experts to achieve the goal of reopening.”

Funding from the Welsh Government through its Enabling Natural Resources and Well-being partnership was, according to Welsh Water, “instrumental in enabling new ways of working”. It said: “The innovative collaboration brought together Welsh Water, the Reservoir Action Group, Cardiff Council, and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board... The funding enabled the development and delivery of an innovative community engagement programme”.

Welsh Water chief executive, Peter Perry, said: “Thanks to our business model, which is unique in the sector, the Lisvane and Llanishen reservoirs redevelopment was designed with the wellbeing of people and nature at the heart of the scheme.”
