Water retailer Wave has supported customers to save 5.8bn litres of water since 2021, according to figures published in its latest environmental, social and governance (ESG) report. This puts the company over halfway towards achieving its goal to help customers save 9.4bn litres by the end of 2026.
Underpinning the achievement, Wave has extended its water efficiency service offering, and has consistently advocated proactive water management with large users, including through its long standing partnership with industrial and commercial customer body the Major Energy Users’ Council. Wave is also rolling out mandatory water efficiency training for all employees, and undertakes wider awareness-raising activities including through schools partnerships and at industry events including Northumbrian Water’s Innovation Festival.
The carbon savings attributable to the 5.8bn litres of water saved are 2.2m kg in carbon dioxide emissions. Wave is also investing in its own carbon reduction plan and creating a carbon reduction fund.
Commenting on the relationship between net zero and water efficiency, Tony March, director of public sector and industrial customers, said: “We need to hit net zero, but doing so requires water-intensive decarbonisation projects to go ahead. In a country where we face the ever-present danger of water scarcity, there’s a difficult balance to strike. The truth is, we need to deliver decarbonisation of the economy and water demand reduction. Wave is committed to playing an important role in harmonising these competing priorities.”
