Wave launches social and sustainability focused volunteering platform

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

Retailer, Wave, has launched an innovative volunteering platform designed to both enhance employee wellbeing and support the company’s social and sustainability values.

The platform, Alaya, enables Wave staff to match their skills to existing volunteering opportunities across the UK and around the world, in person and virtually, and to nominate charities that matter to them. It measures in units called Hopeys the ‘good’ generated by volunteering activity as well as any monetary amounts raised or donated. Hopeys can also be earned by employee behaviour changes such as reducing the length of showers or going vegan for a week.

Alaya provides each individual Wave employee with feedback on their contribution, boosting wellbeing by showing the impact they are making. It also aggregates Hopeys for Wave as a whole, which the company will use to demonstrate delivery as it works towards a new ISO Standard in Social Responsibility (ISO:26000).

Jane Austin, director of HR, said Wave was the first retailer to take such an innovative approach to volunteering and that the initiative contributed to the social and sustainability promise the company made in October 2021.
