WaterSafe and regulators call on plumbers to quit using lead solder

National register WaterSafe has launched a campaign calling for plumbers and installers to ditch solder containing lead.

The use of lead solder in drinking water systems is illegal but a survey of plumbers showed two-thirds carry it in their bags. Lead can dissolve into drinking water and cause health issues, particularly in babies and young children.

Julie Spinks, director of WaterSafe, said: “We’re also urging anyone who has work being done on their drinking water plumbing, particularly people in charge of nurseries and schools, as well as landlords, health organisations and local authorities, to ask their plumber which type of solder they are using to make sure it’s lead-free.”

The campaign is supported by the drinking water regulators for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Unblocktober, the annual campaign to keep sewers and drains free of harmful materials, reported 72,677 people signed its pledge last month, its sixth year of operation.
