Water2Business leads way as big retailers improve performance

Retailers’ performance against Market Performance Standards (largely based around meter reading) improved across all three reporting categories – large retailers, small retailers, and self-suppliers/new appointments – in 2020-21 compared to the previous year, according to data just released by MOSL.

Market wide, large retailers scored 87.7% this year, up from 80.9% last year. Water2Business remained in the top spot with 95.1%, followed by Business Stream with 93.5%. Castle Water remained bottom of the table with 78% but still improved its 2019/20 performance. Market wide performance for small retailers was 92.1%, up from 87.6%.

Meanwhile, self-suppliers continued to outperform. Market wide performance for the category was 96.4%, up from 92.7% last year. Sefton Council secured the near perfect score of 99.6%, and Greene King, Heineken, Marston’s, Stonegate, Blackpool Council, Whitbread and BT all outperformed their category.

Of the wholesalers, Portsmouth Water took the top spot from last year’s leader Yorkshire Water, with 98.9%. Yorkshire Water was the second highest performer (and the highest performing water and sewerage company) with 96.9%. Thames and SES Water tied for bottom with 74.1%. The market wide average for WASCs was 86.8% and for WOCs was 89.6%.

MOSL this year published the data as part of its Annual Market Performance Report 2020-21. Elsewhere this covered MOSL’s delivery against the Market Performance Framework Roadmap and its wider work. A key theme was the impact of Covid-19, including on meter reads, vacancy and costs.
