On World Kidney Day last week, a number of water companies highlighted their partnerships with Kidney Care UK, to raise awareness of the help available to people living with chronic kidney disease.
Southern Water said only around 100 of its customers on dialysis are currently on its Priority Services Register, despite around 3,000 people being in this situation and around 150,0000 in the region living with chronic kidney disease more widely.
In the Anglian region, some 870,000 people have chronic kidney disease with around 10,000 patients relying on dialysis.
The companies flagged up support services available, including bill reductions, proactive contact in the event of an incident and access to a dedicated phone line.
A home kidney dialysis machine can use 7,500 litres of water every week, the equivalent of almost 80 showers. Moreover, many people with kidney disease have been disproportionately affected by the cost of living crisis, due to the energy intensive nature of treatment, feeling the cold, and many being unable to work.
