Watchdogs under fire as Welsh Water is panned by Welsh Assembly over pollution
Watchdogs and regulators came under fire this week as Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water was criticised by the Welsh Assembly over water pollution and sewage spills.
MSs (Senedd members) claimed that the water company had not been open about the scale of the problems - which had prompted a public outcry – and that the environmental watchdog, Natural Resources Wales, had not prosecuted enough.
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's chief executive, Peter Perry, denied the company had been secretive about spills:
“When we find those problems, we flag them – we then work with NRW to prioritise fixing them…. This has never been treated in an underhand way," he said.
Natural Resources Wales’ executive director of operations, Gareth O’Shea, disputed suggestions that the watchdog took a hands-off approach to enforcement.
