United Utilities unveils renewable wastewater treatment plans
United Utilities (UU) has announced plans to use a wastewater treatment system based on renewable materials to lower phosphorous and ammonia levels in treated water released into the environment from works.
UU will use mobile organic biofilm (MOB) technology as part of £50m investment at Macclesfield Wastewater Treatment Works to help improve water quality in the River Bollin to meet more demanding targets The stricter targets, being introduced from the end of 2024, align with the Water Framework Directive (WFD) said UU.
MOB, according to UU, uses a renewable plant material to digest the sludge produced in the treatment process. Its benefits, UU said, include helping to optimise the wastewater treatment process, increasing capacity, and improving nutrient removal, while itself having a low impact on the environment.
