United Utilities lights up its water treatment

Following testing at United Utilities, an ultra violet light emitting diode disinfection technology has been scaled up to form the “world’s first ever” municipal system in operation at one of the water company's sites.

The technology – developed by Cumbria-based firm, Typhon – is, according to United Utilities, “the only one of its kind” capable of disinfecting drinking water supplies on a large scale.

United Utilities has begun replacing some of its conventional UV disinfection bulbs with LED ones which it said are cheaper and more efficient than conventional ones.
