The public continues to overwhelmingly support temporary water use restrictions during drought periods, Waterwise research for CCW and the Environment Agency has found.

An August survey of 2,000 people revealed:

  • 63% believed it is right to ask people not to use a hosepipe for as long as necessary, with only 17% disagreeing and 20% unsure.

  • 70% considered the instatement of a temporary use ban during hot, dry and sunny conditions to be justifiable, with only 11% disagreeing and 19% unsure.

  • 73% expressed concern about water availability in the UK, regardless of whether their area was under a ban or not. 8% were not concerned and 19% were neither concerned nor unconcerned.

The survey asked the same questions as in the 2022 drought, and the responses were consistent.

Elsewhere, the research found 70% reported taking action to reduce their household water consumption, down from 77% in 2022.
