Thames Water has signed contracts with two major technology companies to support its smart meter rollout, which aims to reach more than one million homes by 2030.
The framework has a potential value of over £50m, based on 650,000 meter installations. It is split into two lots over an eight-year term.
Under the framework, Honeywell will supply the water firm with Concentric smart metering devices, installed outside customers' homes and in businesses, while Sensus UK will supply In-Line meters installed inside. The smart meters from both suppliers will be connected to the internet using Vodafone’s Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, under an existing Thames Water communications framework. The NB-IoT system will provide the water company and its customers with near-real-time data with up to 24 reads a day, and will help to reduce leaks.
Thames Water has already installed over 1.2m meters with the support of its current providers: Arqiva and Morrisons Water Services. Arqiva will remain contracted during the next AMP, enabling Thames Water to rollout around a further 450,000 smart meters in London.
