Thames Water fires up new sewer gas power plant

Thames Water has commissioned its second biogas project, at its Mogden Sewage Treatment Works. The plot will use gas from sewage sludge to heat homes in West London.

The company said the viability of its gas-to-grid model was established at its Deephams sewage treatment plant in North London in 2021, which has served as the blueprint for the project at Mogden.

The Mogden plant has, according to Thames, the capacity to supply gas to 4,000 homes in West London.

The system digests sewage sludge, which to produce biomethane which fuels combined heat and power engines. The gas-to-grid plant will be managed by gas supplier SGN. It will clean a proportion of  the biomethane to export quality methane (natural gas) for use in cooking and heating.
