Talent is water’s biggest challenge, engineers say, as recruiter warns of “brain drain”

by Karma Loveday

Talent shortages are the single largest issue facing the water sector, according to the Water industry labour report.

Specialist water industry recruiter Water by Murray surveyed nearly 4,000 engineers and found that over a quarter said recruitment and skills issues were the number one challenge (see chart). This is driven by an ageing workforce, exodus of talent to other sectors, and limited numbers of new workers entering the industry.

The report warned in addition that a “brain drain is on the cards” given 70% of engineers are considering roles in other industries such as nuclear, oil and gas.

Elsewhere, the research found:

  • Water engineers are motivated to move jobs by pay and job satisfaction, with management being the key factor affecting the latter.

  • There appears to be a disconnect between employers and employees, with engineers focusing on boosting their leadership capabilities, while organisations are seeking improved softer competencies.

  • While over 68% state their roles allow them to innovate, 42% said they don’t have the relevant training. Respondents also cited organisation structure, culture and Ofwat regulation as key barriers to innovation.

Water by Murray said the report aims to assist employers within a national framework to develop a strategic recruitment plan to tackle current and future challenges, and leverage emerging opportunities in the water sector.
