Southern Water has confirmed it has been the victim of a cyber attack.

According to its initial assessment, 5-10% of customers are being notified that they may have been affected by data theft from part of its server estate, along with all current and some former staff. So far, no evidence has been found that the data potentially involved has been published online.

Southern apologised to all concerned, and said it was making contact with everyone whose personal data may be at risk. It is providing both advice and support, including enhanced Experian credit monitoring, free of charge, for the next 12 months, to help prevent fraudulent misuse of personal information.

There has been no operational or service impact. Investigations remain ongoing.
