Household customers in Cornwall will receive a credit to their bill if the county collectively reduces its water consumption between the beginning of February and the end of April.
Under a new initiative launched on 1 February, South West Water explained that £30 will be credited to each customer if a 10% reduction in water use is seen across Cornwall, or a £10 credit will be given if demand reduces by 5% over the same period.
South West Water plans to test out a range of new tariffs during 2025-30, to deliver what it described as “fairer charging structures, where customers who use less, pay less”.
The Cornwall incentive began as the company launched a new campaign, Water is Precious. This asks customers to use water more efficiently (saving them money and helping the environment), with South West Water “playing its part” with a £125m investment to increase water resources.
This includes through repurposing disused quarries for water storage, introducing desalination to Cornwall for the first time, and finding and fixing more leaks than ever before. By 2025 this will boost the region’s resources in Cornwall by around 45% and in Devon by around 30%, the company said.
