Smart meter reads to be identified in CMOS

More detail will be available to trading parties on exactly how remotely sourced meter reads have been obtained from 13 May 2022, when Ofwat plans to implement code change CPW123.

At present, there are four meter reading methods can be specified in CMOS: visual, customer, remote and estimated. Where reads are entered as ‘remote’ trading parties can choose between five valid remote read types.

The code change noted these are now outdated; in particular, it is not possible to identify smart meters – when this would be useful information for retailers in offering services to customers and deciding on a metering strategy. Ofwat agreed to introduce seven new remote read types instead, one of which is smart/AMI.
