Sixteen winning projects shared £42.7m in the fifth round of the Ofwat Innovation Fund’s Water Breakthrough Challenge.
The successful bidders comprised 15 water companies with 70 partners from a wide range of areas, including universities, engineering specialists, environmental charities and even NASA.
The Transform stream, which offers funding of between £2m and £10m, had three winners and accounted for around half the total award. The remaining 13 projects fell under the Catalyst stream, which offers pots of between £150,000 and £2m.
Project topics include progressive sludge, rainwater and leakage management; drinking water quality vigilance; higher environmental water quality; energy and heat recovery; water recycling; and greater data transparency.
Since the Fund began in 2020, 109 projects have been awarded £190m in funding. The next round of the Water Breakthrough Challenge will open in Autumn 2025.
