Sixteen projects have won a share of £40m available in the third round of Ofwat’s Water Breakthrough Challenge innovation competition.
There were 11 winners in the Catalyst stream, and five in the Transform stream. These included £4m for open data collaboration Stream led by Northumbrian Water; £10m for a Severn-Trent led transformation of a wastewater treatment plant into the world’s first retro-fit carbon neutral site; and £8m for a United Utilities to mainstream nature-based solutions.

Ofwat said it had had over 200 entries for its new Water Discovery Challenge which is for innovators outside the water industry. Finalists are due to be announced in July.
