Severn Trent wins international approval for carbon cutting plan

Global initiative, Science-Based Targets (SBTi) has approved Severn Trent Water’s carbon reduction plan.

The company is one of around 600 businesses globally, to have its science-based emissions target rubber stamped by the SBTi – a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature.

The company has pledged to reach net zero carbon emissions, using 100% renewable energy and transitioning to a fleet of vehicles that are entirely electric by 2030. It has claimed its greenhouse gas emission targets are consistent with reductions that are required to keep warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement.

Severn Trent chief executive, Liv Garfield, said: “It’s not just about us. We want to bring our supply chain with us on the same journey. Only by working together, can we achieve these ambitious carbon emission targets.”

Earlier this year, Severn Trent revealed plans to invest £565m over the next four years to help the environment as part of an ambitious Green Recovery programme. The company has also recently announced it has joined forces with Birmingham 2022 to help deliver the first ever carbon-neutral Commonwealth Games.
