Scottish Water gets green light for Loch Katrine land management plan

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

Scottish Forestry has approved a ten-year land management plan for Loch Katrine that will support water quality, lock up carbon and boost biodiversity.

The plan has been developed by Scottish Water and long-term tenant Forestry and Land Scotland, and features the restoration and maintenance of several hundred hectares of peatland across the 9,500 hectare estate, as well as the creation of over 4,600 hectares of native woodland, largely through re-wilding and natural regeneration.

Scottish Water anticipated the actions would yield a 40% increase in biodiversity, capture up to 1m tonnes of carbon over 60 years, and make the landscape more resilient to climate change by helping to stabilise soils, hold more water and slow runoff from the land.

Loch Katrine supplies water to 1.3 million people in the Greater Glasgow area.
