Scots align drinking water quality with European Union standards

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

New regulations have been laid in the Scottish parliament which will mean that tough new standards set by the European Commission for drinking water quality in line with updated World Heath Office guidelines are adopted by Scotland.

In this case the measures involved will target so-called emerging pollutants and endrocrine disrupting compounds. Such pollutants include polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs), better known as "forever chemicals" which are commonly used in non-stick and water repellent products and do not degrade in the environment.

The new regulations should come into force from 1 January 2023 to tie in with the new monitoring year.

Scotland benefits from the EU Continuity Act 2020 which ensures that it can maintain and advance the high standards shared between devolved Scots and EU law, irrespective of the consequences of the UK’s exit from the European Union.

This is the first time the legislation has been used over drinking water quality.
