Scientist in US have published a proposed wastewater treatment method that they claim overcomes the environmental hazards and lack of effectiveness in removing pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants.
Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University and Portland State University, in collaboration with colleagues at Nanjing University, have reported a study of the use of low-molecular weight carbon compounds called diketones activated with ultraviolet light to degrade emerging contaminants without the use of aggressive and hazardous chemicals.
The scientist report in the journal Nature Water, that their use of diketones combines the benefits of oxidation and reduction processes currently established in water treatment without the attendant environmental risks associated with “ strong, hazardous chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and chlorine.’
The researchers claim “The ingredients used in this alternative process are natural fermentation products, with little to no toxicity, so they are safer and more environmentally friendly.”
