ICE champions water recycling over efficiency
Engineering experts have urged the UK water industry to push harder in seeking innovation in recycling wastewater to boost drinking water resources.
In its latest State of the Nation report, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has pressed water industry infrastructure engineers and the sector’s regulators and policy makers to focus more on creating greater water resources over and above abating consumption and leakage.
With the UK heading towards its water demand outstripping supply by more than third within 25 years, the ICE warned “the real challenge lies in securing new resources and adequate storage.”
It questioned the perception that overcoming the “yuck factor” was a “huge challenge” to gaining public acceptance of potable water produced by treating wastewater. It cites survey findings by the Drinking Water Inspectorate in 2022 and Portsmouth Water in 2024 that more than 70% of those polled would accept drinking water produced by recycling wastewater.
