The utilities sector is facing a potential mass exodus of strategic communications talent across organisations — including suppliers, networks, regulators and trade bodies — at a time when effective public engagement, transparency and trust-building have never been more critical. That’s according to new research from specialist recruitment firm Murray McIntosh.
Its Strategic Communications Report 2026 collated the results of a survey of 3,200+ professionals from across strategic communications disciplines, incorporating corporate communications, policy and public affairs. This found 58% were planning to change jobs within the next six months. Murray McIntosh said: “This isn’t solely an entry-level or Gen Z issue, and directors are not immune, with two in five of respondents within this group considering a move.” Three in four respondents said they had interviewed for a new role in the last year.
Murray McIntosh observed: “Such a level of unrest is unusual in this sector and in professions that have historically valued stability and long-term relationships. Regardless of the motivations, it’s clear that the UK’s strategic communications workforce is in flux at precisely the moment when political and regulatory engagement is most critical.”
Lauren Maddocks, associate director, policy and public affairs at Murray McIntosh, added: “When public trust is fragile, and expectations around transparency, sustainability and accountability are rising, experienced communications professionals aren’t a ‘nice to have’, they are fundamentally critical.”
