RAPID clears Mendip Quarries reservoir to continue development

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

The Regulators’ Alliance for Progressing Infrastructure Development has cleared the Mendip Quarries strategic water resource scheme to progress to the next stage of development.

As it agreed the scheme could progress to Gate Three, RAPID said the evidence suggests the solution is a potentially valuable way of supplying water to customers, and that its funding requirements remain in line with the original proposal.

The Mendips Quarries solution is a reservoir arising from a re-purposed quarry located in the Mendips hills. The gate two work has concentrated on Torr Quarry, which is located between Frome and Shepton Mallet. The reservoir would have a useable capacity of 28.5 million m3; and be fed by a combination of groundwater and surface water from an enhanced River Avon abstraction licence, providing a water resource benefit of up to 46 megalitres per day (ml/d).
