Portsmouth Water is seeking suppliers for its planned project to install smart water meters in its region and build the attendant infrastructure works.

The five year, £136.5m project has a further potential extension to another five years.

The procurement activity is divided into two lots and anticipates that both resulting contracts will commence in August 2025. Portsmouth is inviting suppliers to bid for one or both lots.

Lot A – infrastructure term service contract: this contract includes water mains renewals and replacement, new water mains, service pipes and connections, water mains extensions and diversions, water mains repair and maintenance, and ad hoc Smart Water Meter installations.

Lot B – smart water meter installation: this contract includes smart water meter installations and commissioning, including deployment planning, delivery and strategic planning.

The project, Portsmouth said, “will roll out smart meter technology that will deliver operational efficiency, improve customer service, and promote water conservation for the Portsmouth Water area of supply – a region classified as an area of ʻserious water stressʼ by The Environment Agency in 2021.”
