Poll finds more than three quarters of water industry suppliers struggle to attract new staff

More than three quarters the water industry supply chain are struggling to recruit new staff according to a survey of members by The Future Water Association.

In the first of what the association described as a “regular health check” of the industry it found that 76% of respondents were experiencing “difficulty with recruiting and capacity building” while 20% said they were having no such difficulty and the rest “haven’t noticed.”

Association chief, Paul Horton, said the difficulty demanded “immediate attention.”

Other questions in the check, and responses to them, were:

which of the following are you experiencing –

business is significantly better than expected (12%)

better than expected growth (24%)

stable growth (64%) or

a downturn in growth (0%);

are you continuing to allow staff to work remotely – yes (88%) and

have you changed your working practices permanently to allow for flexible working – yes (84%)

Meanwhile, the association, in a partnership with recruitment advisor, Cariffi, has formed an “action group,” The Wave, to foster collaboration in the water sector to address its skills shortages by making it “a destination employer.”
