PM calls on regulators to come up with growth ideas, reports say

The prime minister, chancellor and business secretary have formally charged regulators with coming up with ideas to boost economic growth, according to press reports.

In a letter, the trio reportedly asked for “pro-growth and pro-investment” responses by mid January, including of Ofwat and the Environment Agency.

Demanding such action of arm’s length regulators would be the latest in a series of government moves to support its central growth mission, following planning reform announcements and the courting of investors.

Figures produced just before Christmas showed zero growth in the UK economy between July and September.
