Northern Ireland Water faces a 21% cut in funding
Northern Ireland Water is facing the loss of more than a fifth of its funding during the 2024/5 financial year according to its proposed allocation under the region’s latest budget just announced by the Department for Infrastructure.
The politician in charge of the publicly-owned water company, infrastructure minister John O'Dowd, made it clear the proposed 21.7% reduction in resource and capital funding would have a “serious” impact.
O'Dowd warned: “Failure to continue to provide the funding independently assessed as necessary to maintain functioning water and wastewater infrastructure will have a direct impact on service delivery, including continued constraints on development at a time when economic recovery is so important and significantly increased risks of widespread water outages, sewer blockages and untreated sewage being discharged into the environment, directly impacting public safety”.
Northern Ireland Water is set to receive £137.7m resource and £323.6m capital funding during the current financial year.
