Nature-Based Solutions Bill pursues a requirement for green water schemes

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

Green MP Adrian Ramsay has presented a Private Members' Bill to require water companies and relevant public bodies to use nature-based solutions as a means to improve water and flood risk management services.

On X, he explained: “Building ever-more flood defences cannot be our only response to the growing risk of flooding. We should be using nature to hold back water during heavy rainfall, installing ‘leaky’ dams which release water slowly, digging ponds to store floodwater and protecting floodplains. My Private Members' Bill would require water companies to deliver a set amount of water improvement works through nature-based solutions, enforced by Ofwat.”

The Nature-Based Solutions (Water and Flooding) Bill is scheduled for a Second Reading on 7 March 2025.

Meanwhile, fellow Green MP Ellie Chowns introduced the Water (Agricultural Pollution) Bill, to make provision to prevent, reduce and regulate agricultural pollution of water. A Second Reading is set for 14 March.

Also in Parliament last week, Lib Dem MP Martin Wrigley presented a Bill to amend section 172 of the Companies Act 2006 to require directors to balance their duty to promote the success of the company with duties in respect of the environment and employees. The Second Reading is scheduled for 4 July.
