Lib Dems set sights on sewage to target Tory seats

by Karma Loveday

Tackling sewage pollution is emerging as an important strand of the Liberal Democrat campaign, which is reported to be specifically targeting around 90 Conservative seats, with a goal of becoming the third largest Westminster party.

Deputy leader Daisy Cooper was the only participant in Friday’s leaders’ debate on the BBC to mention sewage pollution; this followed leader Ed Davey’s high profile appearance on a paddle board on Lake Windermere. The party has pledged to turn water companies into ‘public benefit corporations’ bound by legal requirements to meet green goals and not to be profit-driven. The Lib Dem manifesto is also expected to include plans for ‘Blue Flag Rivers’ which have protected status.

No other party has as yet majored on the issue. The Labour manifesto is expected to include a ban on bonuses for water bosses whose companies are responsible for sewage pollution.
