Last chance looms to boost green protections in Retained European Union Law Bill

Writer: by Karma Lovedayby Karma Loveday

MPs last week rejected Lords’ amendments to the Retained EU Law Bill that sought to ensure laws to protect the environment are safeguarded and Parliamentary scrutiny is strengthened.

The government has argued these are unnecessary, but campaigners want to see environmental protections enshrined in law rather than just guaranteed by the words of ministers, and for any changes to have to go through primary legislative scrutiny rather than be introduced as secondary legislation as the Bill proposes.

The Bill is due back in the Lords on Tuesday and in the Commons on Wednesday, and may be finalised by the end of the week.
