Input sought on action plan to bring transparency to water industry green spending
(by Karma Loveday)
The Clear Waters Partnership – a collaborative project that brings together environmental groups, regulators, local authorities, the water sector and consumer representatives around a shared vision for improved transparency – is seeking input until 6 November on its draft action plan to bring transparency to what water company investment actually delivers for the environment.
The plan is focused on making information about water sector spending on the environment easier to find, understand and use. It has identified three priority themes:
Enhancing existing geospatial mapping via an easy-to-use tool showing what is happening locally, what action is being taken and the expected outcomes.
Creating a water data portal – a shared data platform where trust, governance and accessibility are critical.
Building a cross-sector communications approach – where communications are viewed through the lens of trust building rather than simply information sharing.
Clear Waters noted that some potential improvements could be delivered quickly, such as through clearer signposting and better interactive maps, while others could take longer, including creating a single place where people can access all relevant water data and information. It said it was mindful of the value for money, ownership and affordability of different actions and recognised budgetary constraints. Next steps will follow in the new year.
