Growth-focused former Amazon boss appointed as interim CMA chair

by Karma Loveday

Former Amazon boss, Doug Gurr, has been appointed interim chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) with the explicit message that he will use the post to support growth. Chair since 2022 (for a five year term) Marcus Bokkerink is understood to have resigned following a meeting at which regulators presented their ideas for driving growth to the chancellor and business secretary. A CMA press release shared that regulators were asked to “tear down the barriers hindering business and refocus their efforts on promoting growth”.

Reports suggest the CMA presentation fell short of ministers’ expectations. However, the CMA’s primary duty is to ensure consumers are well served by effective and fair competition.

Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “This Government has a clear Plan for Change – to boost growth for businesses and communities across the UK. As we’ve set out, we want to see regulators including the CMA supercharging the economy with pro-business decisions that will drive prosperity and growth, putting more money in people’s pockets.” The Government will shortly consult on a new growth-focused strategic steer to the CMA.

Gurr is the former country manager of Amazon UK and president of Amazon China. He is currently director of the Natural History Museum.

Recruitment of a permanent chair will begin in the coming weeks.
