Green protections hang on hope of Parliamentary compromise
by Karma Loveday
MPs last Wednesday once again voted down amendments to the Retained European Union Law Bill affirmed by Lords just the day before, which sought to enshrine environmental protections and strengthen Parliamentary scrutiny of any future changes to retained legislation.
The Bill has been bouncing between the Lords and Commons on these two points, in a process nicknamed "ping pong". Commentators said both sides usually compromise in such situations and that the Lords seem willing to do so but the government is intransigent.
The Bill is due back in the Lords today.
