Governments consult on UK-wide ban of wipes containing plastic
The governments of the four UK nations are consulting until 25 November on banning the manufacture, supply and sale of wet wipes containing plastic. The aim is to reduce marine pollution and micro plastics entering wastewater treatment plants. UKWIR research found wet wipes contribute to 94% of sewer blockages.
The consultation seeks views on how manufacturers, suppliers and consumers would be impacted; alternatives to wipes containing plastic; whether any exemptions are needed; and the timeframe for the ban.
96% supported a ban in a 2021 Call for Evidence, and the commitment is part of the UK Government’s Plan for Water.
Alongside the consultation document, the governments published an annex containing information regarding the potential economic impacts of the proposal.
