Government names new Science Advisory Council chair

The Government has appointed a new chair for the Science Advisory Council (SAC). Professor Rowland Kao will hold the post for three years from 8 January 2025.


Kao is a Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology and Data Science at the University of Edinburgh, and researches infectious disease dynamics, mainly with respect to the role of demography in the spread and persistence of infectious diseases in wildlife, humans and livestock.


He was a member of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) from 2018 to 2024.


SAC provides expert, independent advice on science policy and strategy to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.
