Government appoints interim chair for competition watchdog

by Trevor Loveday

Business secretary, Alok Sharma, has appointed Jonathan Scott as interim chair of the Competition and Markets Authority following the departure last month of Lord Andrew Tyrie after only two years into a five-year term.

Previous CMA board member, Scott (pictured) takes the interim role for “up to one year” during the search for a permanent successor.

Scott was appointed a non-executive director of the CMA board in 2016 and has served as chair of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.

In a statement on his early departure, Lord Tyre said: “I now want to make the case more forcefully for legislative and other reform – in Parliament and beyond – than is possible within the inherent limits of my position as CMA chairman.”
