Find the best water model and act without fear, Labour MP counsels

by Karma Loveday

Barnsley Central MP, Dan Jarvis, has counselled that “We must find the best long-term model – and then act without fear” in reference to reforming the water industry.

In an article for Labour List, Jarvis offered a rare glimpse of Labour thinking on its plans for the water industry should it be elected in 2024 – perhaps positioning himself for the environment secretary post.

He said the industry must be transformed because it is failing consumers and the environment, but that the all options should be considered – from re-nationalisation to alternatives including “an arms-length company or cooperative working for public benefit or the Scottish model of full public ownership plus regulator. Whatever else, we need a strategic regulator answerable for environment and resilience as well as economic issues.” The choice would in part depend on factors including how much re-nationalisation would cost, he said.

Jarvis used the water industry to illustrate a wider point about Labour being both bold and electable. He argued ambition, rigour and political reality should be the guiding principles. He said: “My argument is that with the right mix of ambition, rigour and politics, we don’t have to choose between timid inaction and unelectable irresponsibility. We can find a way both to win power – and to serve our country’s needs when we do.”
