Environment Agency workers in weekend strike action

Environment Agency staff who are members of the Unison trade union have been on strike over the weekend in the latest round of action over pay and resourcing.

According to a BBC report, workers argued that a 2% pay offer from the government equated to a 20% real-terms pay cut since 2010, given inflation impacts. Moreover, the report said the agency relied on staff volunteering to provide 24/7 cover for serious emergency incidents, such as floods and pollution incidents which can pose a threat to life.

The Unison ran from Friday to Monday. EA members of the Prospect union are also taking strike action, but the unions are coordinating to ensure public and environmental safety.
