Environment Agency chief rejects media claims of recent pollution inspection cuts
Environment Agency (EA) chief executive, Sir James Bevan has rejected media claims that the Environment Agency has taken a decision to reduce inspections of bathing water pollution incidents.
In his response to a request for information on this from the House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee, Sir James said The Times’ article Beach sewage inspections to be scaled back to which the letter referred was “factually inaccurate and misleading”.
He said: “The Environment Agency has not taken a decision to reduce the response to bathing water pollution incidents,” explaining the position it adopted in 2021 to focus on the most serious incidents remained.
He also said: "We will always do the best we can with the money we have” and that “The extensive amount of monitoring we have required the water companies to install…is telling us more about pollution arising from sewerage systems than ever before."
