Drinking water quality in England remained excellent in the 2024 calendar year, according to the annual report on public water supply quality from the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Compliance with the standards was 99.97%. The infographic shows the key parameters.

Chief inspector Marcus Rink flagged up in his foreword that the water supply system, however, “is under pressure from a range of different threats, and these are made more urgent by climate change and population growth”. These include legacy issues such as lead pipes and nickel in domestic dwellings, PFAS and other environmental threats as well as infrastructure, security and operational technology.

He highlighted that he had, in January, made recommendations to ministers for updates to the regulations including regarding drinking water quality, sufficiency, and alternative sources such as recycling. These recommendations for drinking water have formed the basis of guidance to water companies, “with the ultimate objective to update the regulations to meet modern standards of quality. This will enable consumers to remain confident in the quality of their drinking water, and that they are protected from exposure to contaminants.”
