Defra consults on principles for marine net gain
Defra is consulting on principles of marine net gain, to inform the policy and approaches to put the marine environment into recovery, in line with commitments in the 25 Year Environment Plan and net zero strategy.
The consultation, open until 30 August, contains nine principles covering: defining marine net gain, its scope, interventions, strategy, and actions in marine protected areas.
Defra said: “We propose a strategic approach to marine net gain, designed to be simple and clear for all stakeholders to use while delivering measurable gains for nature and facilitating collaborative opportunities for maximum impact, whilst maintaining flexibility for developers to deliver onsite enhancements where these are environmentally significant."
Among the considerations are whether to mandate net gain for marine developments, and whether alongside restoring nature a broader environmental net gain approach should be taken incorporating biodiversity and environmental services.
